Every week Fleeting crawls Nashville for time-limited windows -- the dinners, pop-ups, residencies and runs that are here then gone -- and records when each one opens and closes. This is the churn cut of that record: how many food and drink windows opened versus closed each month, and how long the ones that closed actually lasted. One number, updated monthly, honest about how young it is.
Food and drink windows only. Net is opens minus closes; median days-open is the lifespan of the windows that closed that month.
| Month | Opened | Closed | Net | Median open |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jul 2026 | 69 | 37 | net +32 | 1 day |
| Aug 2026 | 149 | 165 | net -16 | 1 day |
| Sep 2026 | 109 | 115 | net -6 | 1 day |
We are a young newsletter: this covers 3 complete months of record (Jun 25 - Oct 29, 2026). We report churn only for months we watched end to end -- the partial first month and the current, unfinished month are left out. 3 months is a reading, not a trend; we will not call it one until the record is long enough to.
The source is Fleeting's own weekly discovery crawl -- 18 snapshots between Jun 25 - Oct 29, 2026. A window is a distinct listing (its title and venue), counted once even if it appears in several weeks. It is a food window when its category, title or description matches Fleeting's shared food-and-drink vocabulary, or it comes from a known food source -- the same test our recommendation replies use. A window opens in the month its stated open date falls and closes in the month its stated close date falls; both must be real calendar dates. We only report a month once the crawl has watched it from its first day to its last -- a month we joined partway through, or the current unfinished month, is left out rather than reported short. Median days-open is counted inclusively from open to close (a one-night window is 1 day) over the food windows that closed in the record. Every number here is produced by build_churn_rate.py from the crawl record -- there are no hand-entered figures. The underlying table is published as JSON and CSV for anyone who wants to check or cite it. A short window that opens and closes between two weekly crawls can be missed: this is a sample of the curated time-limited windows Fleeting tracks, not a census of every restaurant change in Nashville.
